Visiting Petronas Towers

You can’t really go to Kuala Lumpur without visiting Petronas Towers. After all they’re probably one of the most defining and iconic images of the city, if not the entire country.

Discover four different ways to get the best view of Petronas Towers:

1. Buy tickets and go up

View from inside the Petronas Towers

The most obvious way to see the Towers is to visit them and by that we mean booking yourself onto the official tour. Tickets on the day sell out quickly (ticket office opens at 8.30) and the queues are often long but you can buy tickets for Petronas Towers online at least 24hrs in advance so you don’t have to get up super early (queuing starts from 6.30am) to bag your tickets. Don’t forget to bring your passport along on the day just in case they ask to see it. Tickets are apportioned into 15 minute time slots from 9am to 8.15pm. It’s worth knowing that the Towers are closed on Mondays.

The most popular times to visit the Petronas Towers are morning (from about 10am) and early evening from about 5pm (to catch the sunset). These are also the times that book up quickly so try to buy your tickets as early as possible to have the best choice of time slots. We don’t remember having any time limits on our visit but you probably won’t need more than one hour to do it justice.

If you’re short of time, don’t like heights , didn’t manage to book online before you arrived in KL and don’t fancy getting up super early to bag yourself tickets, then our advice would be to skip the tour altogether and choose from the list below. Or, if you’re like Scott and love tall buildings from every possible angle then you can do all of them!

2. Just look up!

Just look up! – Taken from Suria KLCC

There is a lovely park just outside KLCC shopping centre where you can sit and marvel at the Towers. They  are right behind the shopping centre so you can see them in all their glory. If you’re with kids they can have a paddle in the pool in the park too. At night there’s a music and light display on the water and the Towers are lit up. It’s all very pretty. And free!

3. Add alcohol

Grab yourself a cocktail at one of the many bars that have amazing views of the Twin Towers – our fav’s were:-

  • Cantaloupe Bar at Troika Sky Dining – it felt like a bit of a trek to get to from our hotel (Mandarin Oriental) but was well worth it for the views and the great wine list. We didn’t eat but the food looked good.
  • Marini’s on 57 Rooftop Bar – perfect if you fancy a bit of glitz as it’s quite dressy and has a dress code. Not cheap either but the cocktails were good.

Other recommended places are:-

  • Heli Lounge Bar – we really want to go here. It’s on our list!
  • Sky Bar @ Traders Hotel – one of the most popular bars for viewing the Petronas Towers, it’s position affords it some of the best views – also on the list for our next visit.

4. Open your curtains.

Book yourself a stay at one of the hotels with views of the Twin Towers and wake up/fall asleep with those iconic towers as your view. You’ll need to book the specific rooms that have the ‘Petronas Twin Towers’ view.  The higher the floor the better the view so you may want to upgrade your room choice to get a better view.

  • View from our Club Level Room and Lounge

We stayed at the Mandarin Oriental in a ‘Twin Towers’ Club Room. We had great views and these were even more impressive from the Club Lounge. Some think the Mandarin is too close to the Towers so the views aren’t as good as from other hotels. We didn’t stay in the others to compare but we certainly enjoyed the views from our room and especially from the Club Lounge (although admittedly, the nightly 2 hours of delicious canapés and cocktails helped things along!).

  • Other recommended hotels which have rooms with Petronas Twin Towers views are :-
    • Grand Hyatt Hotel
    • Traders Hotel
    • Renaissance Hotel
