This is a bit about us, how we’ve come to start this blog and why we’ve called ourselves the Raving Retirees!
We met in London 7 years ago just after we’d turned 40 on a dating site called Plenty of Fish. Along with a general astonishment at finding a date on there who was actually normal it was the unique combo of finding someone else who loved amazing food, incredible music and travel that sealed our fate.
From the day we met we talked non-stop about quitting our corporate jobs and heading off to live a life in the sun but weren’t sure how we could turn our dream into a reality. After meeting a fabulous couple in Ibiza who’d already done just that we were inspired to go and make it happen.
So we hatched a plan, started saving and finally 5 (long) years later we went for it. We handed in our notice, packed up our stuff and set sail on the ferry towards a new life in the Algarve to enjoy 300+ days per year of sunshine and a very different pace of life.
Whilst the plan is to spend a lot of our time exploring, both in Europe and further afield, we’re also looking forward to having more time to spend on our hobbies and interests. For Scott, that means more time for his passion which is writing and producing Trance music. For Danielle, that means writing this travel blog plus having fun trying out new recipes and learning yoga.
We’ve been here a year now and loved every minute of it. But now we’re ready for a change. In May 2018 we’re packing up all our stuff (again) and heading off to S.E. Asia for 4 months. We can’t wait!
We’ve created this blog so we can record and share our stories and experiences both for our trips but also for when we’re back in Portugal.
As a musician and sound obsessive Scott plans to capture and share the sounds and music from our travels and maybe even write a piece of music or two. He also LOVES taking pictures with his new iPhone X so there’ll be plenty of those.
One of our great passions is food and our trips are really just a thinly disguised effort to eat (and drink) our way around the world. So we’re looking forward to writing a lot of food related posts as we make our way around S.E. Asia. We’re especially excited about finding great street food and local cafes, tasting everything from the classics to some more modern interpretations, exploring food markets and taking a few cookery classes so we can bring home more than memories.
We aren’t really the intrepid traveller types so whilst our budget is fairly tight we do like comfort and love a bit of luxury. So we’ve been on the look out for fun ways to make our lemonade budget stretch a bit further – we’ve got a few treats lined up already so we’ll be posting about them and of course we’ll let you in on our top tips!
And why did we call ourselves the Raving Retirees? Well, back in our 20’s and 30’s we both lived to party, loving nothing more than spending entire weekends out clubbing with friends. Now we’re a bit older (and wiser!) we’ve dialed our partying ways down a notch or two but we do still like to find fun places to let our hair down and have a dance.
We hope that you’ll find our posts useful, interesting, perhaps even inspirational but above all fun. We’d love to hear your comments and questions about what we post so please don’t be shy.
